This work is an homage to the city that raised me. As a child of New York, chaotic energy became so familiar to me that I grew fascinated by the mundane. It was in aimless roaming, long train rides and hanging out on stoops that I practiced the art of observation. I was particularly drawn to time-worn and weathered walls, their peeling layers of paint, crumbling stucco, exposed brick and cracked concrete. These time-worn visuals represent the passing of time, the history of my city and all those before me.
To embody this history and natural wearing of time, I employed layers and layers of paint and stucco on found wood, alternating between construction and deconstruction. The neutral colors help to isolate and emphasize the deeply textured surface expression. This style and technique has informed much of my textured and neutral work since.
